Pros: Interior materials, AWD, Rear seat configuration. Cons: Acceleration is only adequate, Sunroof causes some major wind noise, Fuel Economy. The Bottom Line: Not recommended, If this vehicle is a must, I suggest waiting another year when the H6 powered trim lines are due for production.
When you first set eyes on funky looking 2003 Baja you can't help but think of the infamous 'Brat' Subaru once produced during the early-mid 1980s. Both of these car/truck like vehicles are based on a passenger car platform; the Subaru...

Pros: Tight, quality construction and unique design with excellent handling Cons: wind noise, really heavy tailgate The Bottom Line: This is a great cross over vehicle - rugged and more useful than an SUV and handles beautifully and it looks good!

Pros: More utility than sport, gas mileage, uniqueness, full time four wheel drive, price, safety rating. Cons: Blind spots, noticeable lack of passing / merging power, control illumination. The Bottom Line: If you like it, buy one. You won't be disappointed. However, because of the lack of engine power, and troublesome blindspots, I give it a four out of five rating.
Here in New England, Subaru is somewhat of a well-kept secret. Everyone knows someone who has one or has had one. But you may be surprised that the image of the quirky, foreign, hamster wheels under the hood, with the rotted out half-primed body panels ...

Pros: Great handling, comfy ride, flexible cargo area Cons: Position of cupholders & armrest, MPG The Bottom Line: Once you get past the looks, you'll love it. But get it with the bed extender and SnugTop!
When my wife and I set out to buy a new car, we had already narrowed it down to a Subaru. They came highly recommended by friends and coworkers, test drives of the various models left us impressed with their handling, and we noted seeing an ...

Pros: Functionality. Subaru durability. Uniqueness. Gas mileage Cons: Pricey for its class. Few options to customize the vehicle. The Bottom Line: I highly recommend the Baja, it complements my family's lifestyle. If you are looking for a durable, versatile vehicle, then you should take the time to check it out.
I purchased a 2003 Baja just over 6 weeks ago. As an owner of two other Subarus (Outback wagon and Legacy sedan), I have extensive knowledge of this particular Subaru chassis. However on the other hand, the reader should be aware that I am biased toward ...

Pros: quality, all wheel drive, excellent handling Cons: expensive, not really a truck The Bottom Line: The unique Subaru Baja is worth a look. It is a quality car/truck that handles well and can haul items other SUVs and cars can't.
I just purchased a 2003 Subaru Baja about a week ago, and while it is probably just "new car euphoria," so far I am very happy with it. It is classified as a truck, but handles like a car. It is built on Subaru's "Legacy, Outback" chassis and handles ...

Pros: Size, handling, useful, comfortable, and cool! Cons: Rear seat belts, lack of power, bass speaker under seat. The Bottom Line: I recommend this vehicle for those that need both a truck and a car rolled into one, but don't want to spend a ton of money.
After buying our first house, it became necessary to look for a vehicle that would serve our needs more effectively than our sedan. We needed something to transport furniture, landscaping equipment, appliances and more. A pickup was our first ...

Pros: Handles like a sports car. Useful like no other vehicle. attention grabber. Fun! Cons: Could do better on mileage. Noise from mirrors, sunroof, and front cross bar. The Bottom Line: Buy it if you are outdoorsy. Don't if you need a vehicle to prove your manliness. Useful but not macho.
Hello again reviewers, My little Baja is about to hit 30k on the odometer and it only seems like I was test driving it yesterday. They grow up so fast. Yes, I'm going on like it was my child. But this is the first vehicle I have actually really ...

Performance
AWD
Ground clearance
Price
Cons: Mileage (22MPG)
Rear visibility
Only seats four

Low beams The Bottom Line: If you want the best in AWD and can live with 4 seats add a bed cover for the best price/performance ratio in a sport sedan under 25K.
Sorry for sticking this in the 2003 section but there is no 2004 listing for the Baja. Why the Baja? I am still trying to answer this question. Our new home is in the woods with 1/2 mile rutted dirt road. After the first snow the minivan was ...

FEELING OF SAFETY /HANDLES INCREDIBLY / VERY NICE-LOOKING VEHICLE

Pros: Boxer turbo. Built quality. AWD with limited slip rear. Cons: Funky styling with cladding on body. No leather w/o auto trans. The Bottom Line: Every bit as useful as a traditional pick up for the average person. Turbo with a 5 speed is more fun than most any pick up out there.
Our requirements for a new vehicle were tough. 1., It had to be able to be flat towed behind our motorhome. 2. It needed off road and truck like abilities. 3. It needed to be fun to drive. Not much out there that fills the bill. Others cars owned: ...

Pros: I would have to say its All Wheel Drive and the versatility of it. Cons: Ground clearance could be better and the speedometer is off 4 miles/hour The Bottom Line: I would recommend this car/truck to any one who wants a "throw and go" payload, small truck that will grab the road in any conditions.
I got a black Subaru Baja 2003 over 6 months ago. I live on a farm in Wisconsin we have a few full size trucks that I have drove all my life, so when I got a job in the city I did not want a big full truck to suck gas just to get to work. I still wanted ...

Pros: All wheel drive. Good engineering and well made. It is loaded with safety features. Cons: A little cramped for larger people.
We bought our Baja new and have been enjoying it for three years. With the price of gas soaring, I parked my gas guzzler and have been using the Subaru for commuting. Although the MPG is less than I hoped for, it is still 5 MPG better than my Dodge. The car is still mechanically tight and fun to drive. The all wheel drive is great when the storms move through.

Underpowered Subaru

Pros: very useful truck-like bed....Subaru quality Cons: underpowered, why did they make the backseat available to sit 3?
We have had our 2003 Subaru Baja for a little over 6 months now and i have to admit it has come in handy numerous times for hauling things. We were able to buy and haul a refrigerator home, as well as numerous other things. It is nice to be able to put the tailgate down and put things back there but believe me hauling wood is a pain.....if you are trying to haul lumber buy a truck.
The power on this thing leaves a lot to be desired i find myself with the foot on the floor while trying to merge onto the interstate. And why on earth did they not just make it 3 seats in the back instead of just the two... i mean i can understand if you were able to use the cargo extension hatch and have 2 people sitting back there.
Gas mileage could be better but isn't horrible

Pros: Low center of gravity, good traction management, great gas mileage Cons: cup holder placement in the front is a little awkward with a manual transmission.
I've had my 2003 Baja for about 6 months now, and I still love it. I've recently moved to the icy cold of Wyoming, where snow, wind, and ice are often prevalent, making for some potentially dangerous driving conditions, which make the wonderful defrosting system very handy (clears the foggy windows in around 2 seconds). So far, I've actually had trouble loosing traction with the road (and yes, I've tried), and it's low center of gravity from the horizonally opposed 4 cylinder engine makes it behave like a sports car so much that you forget it has a truck bed. Additionally, it has a deceivingly spacious interior, standard moonroof and, after driving a car for 6 years, has all the benefits of a car with none of the drawbacks. It has a healthy 8" of clearance, which is less than you'd be used to coming from a truck, but is generous to find in a car. Concominantly, for that much clearance, it holds the road very aggressively and behaves like a car in that sense and less like a truck.
