Memory, a computers forget-me-nots
Jun 07 '00
Memory is one of the most important things on your computer. Its also very easy to install. Memory, also called RAM (Random Access Memory) has several different types. Most common are EDO, Fastpage, and SD. These different types of RAM cannot be intermixed. You must have one or the other. Before you buy RAM make sure which kind you have. SD is larger than EDO and EDO is larger than fastpage. A good idea is to remove one of your RAM chips and take it to the store with you. Then get the one like it.
Another crucial part of buying RAM is motherboard speed. Think of it this way, a person is tied to a car. If the cars speed and the person's speed are different, bad things are going to happen. Either the car is going to be dragging that person all around town or the person will be pushing the car all day long. Both are undesirable results. They must be the same speed or else your computer won't recognize it. The speed of your RAM will most likely be one of the following: 33mhz (megahertz), 66, 100,133, 200. Depending on the age of your current RAM, the speed should be written on it.
Another important part of RAM is just how much it can remember. A 4 megabyte (mb) chip can remember near as much information as a 32mb chip. Once you bought your RAM at the right speed and size, its time to install it. Make sure the computer is OFF. DO NOT install RAM when the computer is off. After you turn the machine off, unplug that black or tan three prong plug. Now remove the case and touch the metal shell to get rid of any static discharge that you might have, otherwise you could fry something.
The RAM module has gold-colored flecks on the bottom called PINs. These pins are what you're going to insert into the computer. Notice the spaces every now and then along the PINs. You've got to match them up with the barriers spaced along the RAM holder.
There is a prong sticking out of each side of the RAM holder. These secure the RAM so it doesn't fall out. Push them away from each other gently. The should be at around a 45 degree angle. Don't push then farther than that. Next, making sure the RAM spaces are lined up, insert the RAM module. Then push the securers back towards each other till they lock onto the RAM. Put the case back on. Plug the cord back in and enjoy a faster computer.
