Where To Go For Low Prices (No Retail Stores!)
Jul 27 '00
I am sincerely going to try to make this short. I've only written like 4 reviews, and they're all miles long, so I'm going to TRY and be concise. Right now, for 2000 dollars or less you should be able to get the machine of your dreams, if you steer clear of department stores. I'll cover department stores in another post, hopefully.
OK this will be broken in two parts, Online and offline.
Where Should I. Shop Online?
There are many good places online, and I have two, because these are the ones I use most often. Pricewatch.com is an awesome place online because it's a place where online stores submit their lowest prices to pricewatch so that we get the savings, and they get free advertising. Right now, you can get an 850mhz system PENTIUM THREE System with a 15 Gig Hard Drive, 64 megs of ram and a 56k modem for 924 dollars. add fifty dollars for delivery, and you have what best buy is charging about 1700 dollars for. After rebate. It must be noted that all pricewatch does is guide you to another site that can send you the system you want, pricewatch in itself provides no computer gear. Still, this is a great place to see what your money can get you these days, when you're not paying for some department store's overhead.
The second place is Egghead.com. Formerly Onsale.com, this is an auction house AND a low priced store, so you literally kill two birds with one stone. This is the place where if you look hard, you can find an amazing deal. Right now, they have 6 Hewlett Packard pentium III 450 MHz systems with 6 Gig hard drives, and 64 megs of ram going for 369 dollars. I am not kidding. Best buy would want 1200 easy. This doesn't come with a monitor, but given the fact that you can pick up a nice 17 inch one for around 100 bux, that fact hardly seemed worth mentioning. So for around 500 bux, you can have a wonderful pentium 3 system from a very nice company that I've bought from for 4 years.
Man, this is still long... and I haven't mentioned the offline sources. I apologize..... Too much info....
OK Where Should I. Shop Offline?
Glad you asked! Last summer i desperately needed a new computer, and i was unable to get online to go search for a good deal, so I Picked up a copy of "Computer Shopper" the best mag hands down for not only finding good deals and wholesale offers (think amazingly cheap!), but it provides valuable information, so that i purchase the mag when I'm not looking for something to buy, it's that informative. This magazine features numerous ads from wholesale dealers who're smaller than your big department stores, but still provide great prices, and great computer stuff. Last June, at the beginning of pentium 3's making their move, pentium 2s were still all the rage. I managed to get an amazing deal from one of their regular advertisers, ABScomputers. (they have a website abscomputers.com) I got a pentium II 400 MHz system, 13 gig hard drive, 128 megs of ram and 17 inch monitor for 1204 DELIVERED TO MY DOOR. I am not kidding. And is this an incredible system. You can get a similar deal with a pentium 3 system. And that's just one of the many systems they offer. I added a CD-RW myself, and printer, so for 1500 dollars, I got the system of my dreams, and I never looked back. Just to let you know, had I bought from best buy, or circuit city, it would have cost me at least 2300 dollars at the time, because pentium 2s were still incredibly expensive. And no one wants to give out 128 megs of ram, even now.
So, there you have it, either get online at Pricewatch.com, or Egghead.Com and nose around, or pick up yourself a copy of "Computer Shopper" at borders, books-a-million, Barne's and Noble's, or any book store, and see for yourself how much you can save. I'll tell you what to look for in another post... This one is Wayyyy too long!
:-)
