Why I Feel Laptops Are Better Than Desktops

Nov 22 '00

My experience with desktop computers has proven to me that in the long run the theory that laptop computers break more is unfounded. In my previous job, we had very few laptop problems, yet it seemed that every day several desktop computers would malfunction.

Because of this, I found that I was seriously looking at a laptop computer for my latest computer purchase. I felt that because they were more portable than a desktop, that I would be more likely to bring it with me on personal trips to keep in touch with individuals rather than to be out of the loop without a computer when I was on the road.

Other than the reliability factor, there were other issues which I felt could be addressed. First, there's not that much difference processorwise now between a desktop and a laptop. Granted that most desktops have a variety of input devices that can be attached to the computer instead of just a basic mouse and keyboard, but other than that, I have found that my current experiences with laptop computers tend to support that they are now becoming more ergo friendly.

In addition, I believe that it is easier for a student to be able to carry a computer with him in class to take notes than to jot them down on paper and try to make sense of it later. This is why I have brought my laptop from work to many computer seminars so that I could type out what was being said in the conferences for future reference as well as using a microphone to record conversations.

None of this would be able to be performed on a desktop computer because it is not portable. While most students such as my high school son prefer to have a desktop computer at home, I truly believe that to be successful at college or even in the case of my autistic son, to be successful in just regular school classes, that it would be more beneficial to have a laptop computer as a part of their school supply list.

With proper care, I truly believe that these computers will last infinitely longer than their desktop counterparts, and that they will provide a further means to advance the education of our students in the end by providing them a more accurate means to take notes and write out their work.
