Verses of the Mac & PC

Jan 04 '01

Simply, I am a computer fan/lover/die-hard though, by no means, an expert. Nevertheless, I love PCs because it's what I learned on and generally what I have continued to utilize for the past 15 plus years. That is not to say, however, that I am opposed to the Macintosh, especially the current iMacs. While my expertise lies more heavily with the PC, I have also had extensive experience on Macs.

On a personal level as well as on a professional level, I have found myself more comfortable with the PC for the reasons aforementioned. In addition to utilizing the PC in different companies that I once worked for or with, I also own three PCs which I utilize on a daily basis to operate my home-based business. I have also noted that the majority of my clientele are PC-owners more often than not. Some have both PCs and Macs which I think is great. In fact, if I could afford it, I'd own at least one Mac.

When I worked for Covey Leadership, they used Macs and some of the differences I noticed was that the keyboards were smaller and rather than the CTRL-ALT keys, one utilizes instead the Apple symbol key to generate key commands similar to that of the PC. I also noted that more people used Macs for graphic designing in addition to the standard word processing and other software.

Another observation that I have made is that many elementary schools, particularly in Hawaii and most here in Utah, utilize only Macs. The students are only proficient in Macs and panic when confronted with having to use something different.

Both my brother and sister own iMacs and have been avid Mac fans since the Mac was first on the market years ago. My youngest brother, an attorney, is more versatile as he uses PCs at work, but has a Mac at home. When visiting him last year for a month, I used his iMac and didn't have a problem with it except there were notable differences. For instance, I couldn't find an A drive in it. Interesting, but not funny because I couldn't read any of my disks. So, a friend of mine brought over her IBM Laptop and saved the day for me.

My sister was devoted to the Mac until she actually sat at my PC and realized what benefits there were. She's an art teacher and uses all sorts of art software convinced that it was the only computer for her. She changed her mind after spending two months using my PC where she realized that completing her yearly budgets and detailed reports were easier to maneuver on the PC.

I believe that the pricing is comparable for both PCs and Macs and that both are innovative and creative in their recent desktop designs. I also believe that having any type of computer is useful to the standard user and while it may be a luxury for most of us, it would be nice to have access to both. Either way, it's a benefit to be part of the high tech society that we've become.

Clearly, it's a preference. There are pros and cons on both PCs and Macs, depending on who you ask. One of my former bosses once told me that the village idiot could run a Mac compared to the complicated PC. That was several years ago and many improvements have since been made to both models. The only overall disadvantage I can observe is if a person isn't willing to sit at any type of computer and simply learn and enjoy.

As for the controversy, well, in my mind there isn't one. We're in a new century, we have modern technology that makes life faster and even more fun in some cases, and we are given choices and options which help us to learn, grow, and become more versatile. There's never a downside to knowing as much as you can. PCs and Macs are both beneficial and knowing both, if possible, can only lead to more progression.
