| astidham's Full Review: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror |
We went to Disney World for Christmas. We had a five day hopper pass which allowed us to go to the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and MGM Studios. We went to MGM Studios for a half day of our trip which was not quite enough time to see the whole park. However, we did have enough time to get a fast pass to ride the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.
A fast pass is a pass you can get at certain rides which allows you to return to the ride at a specified interval of time and go to the front of the line. This keeps you from wasting time standing in line and allows you to do other things in the park. My two sisters, brother-in-law, and my 6 year old nephew went on the ride. My nephew was just barely tall enough to ride.
The ride is in an eerie and haunted old hotel. The line to wait winds through the hotel grounds and you really feel like you are at a deserted hotel. Upon entering the hotel, you are greeted by very somber bellhops. They are dressed in the short, red jackets and pillbox hats that bellhops years ago would wear. They really add to the atmosphere of the ride. Once in, you are taken into a lobby which immediately goes dark and are shown a short movie about the hotel and the weird things which happen here. You are then escorted into lines to board 2 elevators. The entrance to the elevators is in the boiler room of the hotel. It looks just like an old boiler room in a basement of a hotel would look. It's complete with dust and cobwebs.
My family ended up sitting on the back row of the elevator. This row goes across the entire width of the elevator and then there are about 4 more rows with space up the middle to walk to the back row. When I entered, I was told by the bellhop to put on my seatbelt! I sat where you walked up the aisle to get to the back row so there was not a row of seats in front of me to hold on to!!! Lucky me!? All of the other seats had a bar for you to hold on to. Once in, the doors shut and we were taken up to the top of the hotel. At some floors the elevator door would open and we could see ghosts of former guests. We were in pitch dark a good majority of the time. Once at the top, the elevator plummeted down and you felt yourself come up off your seat! It stopped part of the way down and went back up only to drop you again. While you were at the top of the hotel, the door of the elevator opened again to reveal the outside and you could see the park and really realize just how high up you were! 13 stories is high when you are looking out over the park above everybody in an elevator that is about to fall!
This ride was awesome! It definitely took your stomach. If you want the full effect of the ride sit on the back row in the middle where I did with the seatbelt. It is a strange feeling. I literally came up off my seat and found myself reaching over to grab hold of the bar in front of the rest of the row. When you think the fall is over, they take you back up and you drop again. I'm sure the ride was no more than a couple of minutes, but it seems to last forever!
Sometime during the ride, they take a picture of the group and you can buy these at the end of the ride. It was fun to look at the faces of everybody and how scared they were. My nephew was pretty scared. He didn't cry, but he was definitely in shock when we got off the ride. He was clinging to his mother. Later in the day we teased him about going back and he said "NO WAY!" If you have a child who is afraid of the dark or gets upset easily, this is not the ride to take them on. Also if you are afraid of heights at all, then I would not recommend this ride. It is definitely scary and will take your breath away. However, if you are ready for the scare of your life, this ride is for you! I think this was my favorite ride out of all four parks.
