Yes, yes. Another Disney review. Hey, you may enjoy this one for a change!
In December of 2002, I took a trip with my family to Orlando, Florida and area. While there, we decided to visit MGM Studios for the sixth time. MGM Studios is the home to many popular rides such as Rock n Roller Coaster and my all-time, top notch favorite: The Twilight Zone, Tower Of Terror! So take a walk down Sunset Blvd. with me, and experience the ride of a lifetime! Think back to the movie, The Twilight Zone.
Walking down that long Sunset Blvd. at MGM Studios, Florida, listen to the screams and the sheer fright of those on the elevator. With the words Hollywood Tower Hotel written white and old-fashioned letters, who wouldnt be a bit nervous? Well, I surely was. We stepped into line winding through a garden with classy 1939 music as you enter the main lobby of the Hollywood Tower Hotel. Cobwebs and dusty furniture welcome you into the main entrance as the bellhops go around saying things like, Luggage, someone lost their luggage, without a single smile, yet with evil in their eyes.
The next step is the library. The bellhops will direct you into a room full of dusty and old books inside a small room. There you will stand as the lights dim and Rod Sterling will come on to the old television. He will tell you about the bustling hotel in 1939 when singers and actors came from all over the world. One evening, just like tonight, you will experience what it is like to be inside an elevator when lightning hits it, as it did when five humans were in it during that busy evening.
You will unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension. A dimension of sound. A dimension of sight. A dimension of Mind. You are moving into a land of both shadow and substance: of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into - The Twilight Zone. (Thanks to 2buzy [a great writer on the site who also wrote about this] for getting the exact words as it is said in the library)
Now if that part doesnt get you nervous and shaken up, well, youll see.
The next stage is the boiler room. This is where you will board the elevators. The boiler room is dark and full of equipment that is needed to power the ride. A bellhop will assign you to your row, as you will sit in one of the four rows inside the elevator.
When the elevator finally comes, you will enter. The back row only has seat belts, and the other rows all have bars. You will need this as you will fly out of your seat, literally! Enjoy your stay here at the Hollywood Tower Hotel. If you have any questions or concerns, too late, he or she will say as they close the door, and all of a sudden, it becomes pitch black.
The next step is going up about two floors. From there, you will hear Rod Sterlings voice again as the screen lights up with an eyeball coming towards you as it floats in space, then a shattering window, and then the screen goes blank. Then, you will see five outlines of those who were in the elevator on the night of 1939, when it was hit by lightning. They will wave you forward as if they are trying to get you to enter...The Twilight Zone.
Then it will become pitch black again and you will go up a few more levels. This time, there isnt an image in front of you as the elevator will actually go into the hallway of the hotel. There are ghosts, cobwebs, and there is scary music. You know the music that I am talking about...the scary music from the series. Then, everything will go pitch black as the elevator will move backwards back to its position that it was at before. Then, you will screams, screams, and more screams but the elevator doesnt move. Then, its silent, and then....you drop 13 levels! You will go back up, windows will open and youll see outside, then, youll drop again several more times.
The ride will come to a stop, and the elevator will bring you to another exit that will bring you to the hotel basement. You will hear Rob Sterlings voice once again. Next time you check into a hotel, make sure you dont end up in...The Twilight Zone.
A bellhop will then open the door and will thank you for staying at the Hollywood Tower Hotel. You can then purchase pictures for about $10. My elevators picture turned out very funny. Everyone had their hands in the air, and had their mouths wide open. People with long hair had their hair straight up as the gravitational force isnt as strong when youre dropping so fast.
You can then purchase sweatshirts, lunch boxes, picture frames, or a door sign that says, Do not disturb, Hollywood Tower Hotel.
The Tower Of Terror is the neatest attraction at MGM Studios, Florida. It is very realistic and the acting from the bellhops is exceptional. They make you feel as if you are really a guest at the hotel and say little things that will make you laugh such as, We hope you DROP in next time youre at Hollywood, or When FALLing asleep in your room, please put the Do Not Disturb sign on your door handle. Smaller kids may find it somewhat scary, but in deep down inside, they may just enjoy it!
Before riding on The Tower Of Terror, there are a few things you should know...
- Pregnant mothers should not ride.
- People with heart problems could have heart attack if riding due to sudden motions of the ride.
- You must be 40 inches or taller to ride.
- Eating or drinking is not allowed while in the elevator.
- 40-something year olds who are afraid to lose their lunch on a ride that seems determined to produce vomit should not ride.
