After graduating from a huge university in which I was treated like a number and felt lost in the crowd, I decided to follow my dream of becoming a musician. I now attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, where I feel like a person again. The classes are actually small enough so that the professors know my name and can recognize me around campus. The students come from all over the world and I feel as though I am part of a world community. The atmosphere here is so laid back that we call our professors by their first names, unlike most universities where students address all of their teachers as “Professor” or “Doctor”.
Since Berklee is a private institution, the cost of education is more expensive than at state colleges. However, the tuition compared to other private music schools is lower at Berklee due to private donations. I think the Uchida Building on Boylston Street was donated to the school by a wealthy Japanese man named Uchida.
Unlike the competitive conservatories, Berklee has a laid back and open minded attitude towards all types of music. It’s not uncommon for a senior recital to be a program of heavy metal music. Originally a jazz school, much of the core music courses are derived from jazz theory as opposed to traditional harmony, which is also required for graduation.
I would definitely recommend this school to any musician who is willing to work hard and really loves music. Berklee has a warm atmosphere that welcomes anyone who loves music and is open minded to all styles of music.
