Pros: Professional Dancing, Singing & Effects Cons: Outdoors could be a problem in bad weather!
T E X A S! "A Musical Romance of Panhandle History" runs nightly throughout the summer months. I recently attended with a group from my church and we all left with a feeling of "Wow"! Ranging in age from 3 to approximately 55...
Pros: trails, rock formations, views Cons: No swimming, fishing
Palo Duro Canyon has been called The Grand Canyon of Texas.
It is a 600-foot drop from the light red caliche of the rimrock down through layers of sandstone and shale laced with white gypsum to the canyon floor, where the seemingly harmless...
Pros: Beautiful scenery, Great Play, Hiking Cons: Hot Summers, occasional rain showers
Although Palo Duro Canyon State Park is beautiful all year round, I highly recommend seeing it in the summer so that you can include tickets to the musical drama "Texas".
This is the 35th year of the musical and it has entertained...
Pros: Beautiful scenery, easy access, cheap
fee, great sunsets, etc...... Cons: The somewhat scary drive into and out of
the Canyon.
We checked in at our hotel in Amarillo and headed south
to Palo Duro. The drive from Amarillo is about thirty minutes or so. It is also somewhat misleading in that the land around Palo Duro is so flat, it seems to go on forever and...
Pros: Beautiful Scenery; Nice Campsites; Great Facilities Cons: Rude Staff at entrance gate; Poor/non-existent Cellphone signal.
Palo Duro canyon is truly a Diamond in the West Texas rough. Geographically, it offers tremendous views unparalleled by anywhere other than the 'Grand Canyon'. Texas Parks and Wildlife did a wonderful job planning and implementing facilities for this...
My family and I went camping last year in Palo Duro Canyon during the late summer. For the most part, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The temperature down in the canyon was much cooler than in Amarillo, and the variety of wildlife that made their way...
Pros: Beautiful, great entertainment Cons: sometimes very hot
Palo Duro Canyon State Park is a beautiful example of Texas' rich landscape. Located just South of Amarillo in the Texas panhandle, the Palo Duro canyons are a wonderful place to visit and explore.
Pros: Wonderful Texas play, great scenery and wildlife. Cons: Floods very easy, camping spots are to close together.
The scenery is fascinating, takes your breath away. You can see the Texas play while your there (highly recommended). Plenty of trails and caves for the hikers and explorers. Great bike trails for people that can't leave there bikes at home. However, if...
Pros: "Texas" Musical is Spectacular ! Worth a trip ! Cons: Might be a bit of a drive if you're
staying in Amarillo
"Texas", a musical pageant of historical events in the
Panhandle area of Texas around Amarillo, is staged in an
amphitheater at the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon, using the
canyon walls as a back drop. The production is well
done, with...
Pros: Rustic scenery; close to Canyon and Amarillo; cool summer nights; showers Cons: Hot summer days; no Starbucks in Canyon
The park is an unexpected delight in the middle of the flat Texas panhandle. A short drive from Amarillo, the park road crosses the beginning of the canyon--on your left there is no canyon, and on your right is the canyon! Colors are beautiful, wildlife is plentiful, and the state park is Texas' best rustic landscape. Camping can be via tent, RV, or cabin. We stayed in one of the cabins on the rim of the canyon and experienced an awesome view. The wind whipped dust around the canyon ridge all night and howled around the edges of the windows and doors. I thought it was romantic, but it frightened my husband. We grilled steaks and sat outside at sunset. The fireworks at the end of the play (in the summer) were more gorgeous in color than I had ever seen. Mountain or road bike trails as well as hiking trails are plentiful in the bottom of the canyon.
Another great Texas Panhandle treat. by txroadrunner ,Sep 16 '03
Pros: Great views, take your camera. The Lighthouse trail is one of the best. Cons: Do not go in the very hot Summer months. fishermen and boaters, find another place.
Who says the plains and panhandle of Texas is boring? Well, they better look again. For those interested in a great hiking experience, then hit the Light House trail for an excursion through the wonderful caprock wilderness. Lots of critters to see and at the end, try to make it all the way to the top of the top.
Visit the other trails to hike and explore. This is one experience that will never be forgotten. For more 411, visit : http://www.txroadrunners.com.
Finally, this park is not far from Canyon and Amarillo so you can visit the park in the morning and see other sights in the afternoon.
