My son had heard of iPods but never showed any interest until he won this 4G iPod at school. (Nice prize, huh?) Of course, it was the unit only and didn't come with anything he'd need to play it in the car or through speakers. Luckily -- so lucky for him -- I had a bunch of stuff from my first generation iPod that worked beautifully for this!
He learned how to use it immediately. I had to help him with the iTunes store account (I wish there were parental controls on that, because they require a credit card to activate the account. If he was dishonest he could shop until I go broke!) and I had to give him the 101 on how to use the controls. But then he was just fine on his own.
The first thing he found were the games. Then he started to discover he actually has preferences in music. He wanted to go through my old CD collection, and download all the newest Disney stuff. We've had a lot of fun exploring free downloads and various styles of music.
Now that the novelty has worn off (thank God!) he doesn't try to sneak it into his room at night, and doesn't beg to get on the computer to download songs.
This thing is tiny! It's smaller than a credit card but it has some weight to it and it's slippery! He's dropped it several times already and it's way too easy to lose/misplace. The first thing I did was look for a safety case but they all run $20 or more! (Why is it that you can buy a fake iPod and accessories at the dollar store but the real deal made from the same materials costs a small fortune? What a market!)
Anyway, I am glad he won this. I never would have shelled out $135 to buy it for him and he's developing an interest in music he never had before. I doubt iPods are going anywhere, so as he gets older and has his own money to spend, he'll know exactly what to look for.
As for me, I wouldn't buy an iPod this small. I like something a bit more substantial that I can see or feel in my purse. This is too small!
