Pros: Effectively filters movies found in the ClearPlay database.
Cons: No upscaling available, USB door easily falls off, remote could be better.
The Bottom Line: If you want to filter out undesirable material in movies, this may be the only alternative. It's not perfect, but it does what it promises.

| harpitect's Full Review: ClearPlay CP007 DVD Player |
The ClearPlay DVD player is a nice home entertainment add-on if you're bothered by blasphemy, bad language, and scenes you'd rather not watch. The filters provided via download by ClearPlay at clearplay.com enable you to customize filters for the many movies which have been reviewed by ClearPlay.
The CP007 is the first model of DVD player produced by ClearPlay. It's my understanding that the CP427 looks different but doesn't provide a whole lot more than this version does. Basically, what you do is pay for a subscription to ClearPlay, though a 30-day trial subscription comes with the player. Subscription price is $7.95 per month or $79.50 for a year. Select movies from the database found at clearplay.com, download a compressed file, and then transfer it to the ClearPlay memory stick, which is nothing more than a USB flash drive with the CP logo on it. Before I received the CP stick I used a generic memory stick with no problems. BTW, when I bought this DVD player several months ago, ClearPlay offered the memory stick free if you register your player on the CP website.
The player has a USB port on the front behind a drop-down door. Insert the USB stick into the port and the player's software reads all the filter codes. When a movie is inserted for which there's a filter, the player gives the user the option to play with full filtering, turn off filtering, or customize filtering. From there on the player acts like any other DVD player.
What happens if you choose full filtering is that the movie plays, but whole scenes may be missing, and sometimes there will be a gap in the dialog as the software masks the bad language. Filtering is very effective!
If you choose to customize filtering, the software will present you with various options and lists for selection of the level of filtering desired. Therefore you may choose, for example, to eliminate blasphemy while leaving curse (or cuss, as we say in the South) words in the film. You can also filter scenes for violence, sex, or other objectionable material. I'm impressed with the degree to which the filtering can be customized.
Choose not to filter, and the player acts just like any other player.
A remote comes with the player. It's about like all DVD remotes, though it seems to be more sensitive to orientation to the player. I've found the player only responds when the remote is held "just-so."
This player is a standard component-size device, so it fits in with a tuner, VCR, and any other component device. The CP007 is silver in color. If you want black, you'll have to go to the CP427. The CP007 offers 480p progressive-scan playback, but you have to set it up to do that, as it comes ready to play in 480i.
