When you think about the Texas Gulf Coast many things come to mind; beaches, fishing, sun and fun. I have spent many summer trips along the Texas Gulf Coast. We have traveled to cities and towns from one end of the coastline to the other. So pack your bags and take a trip with me along the Texas Gulf Coast. You have your choice of any of the small towns and cities that dot the 350 mile stretch known as the Texas Gulf Coast Region.
Places to See and Things to Do:
1. Galveston - Galveston offers you 32 miles of beach and historical things to see. This city has a lot to offer the visitor that stops here for a day or two. There are tours of historical homes and churches that you can take for a minimal fee. If you would like to ride a ferry, the one here is fun. I always enjoyed this as a child and as an adult taking my own children. The ferries operate every 20 minutes between Galveston and Port Bolivar, Texas. The Texas Highway System operates these ferries toll-free. It is a fun ride and the seagulls are plentiful. Moody Gardens is one of the places you want won’t to miss while in Galveston, it is 156 acres of pyramids that represent the different parts of the world; Aquarium Pyramid, which will teach you about the oceans of the world; Rainforest Pyramid, which will help you discover the rain forests of Asia, Africa and South America and Discovery Pyramid, which will help you discover the wonders of space travel. Moody Gardens is a great place for the entire family. Along with all of this Galveston offers you deep-sea fishing and 32 miles of beaches.
2. South Padre Island – The southernmost tip of the Texas Gulf Coast region. South Padre is not only home to thousands of Spring Breakers each year, but a great place for families who want to enjoy the beach or deep-sea fishing. There is not a lot of entertainment here, but if you enjoy the beach and being close to the ocean then this is the place for you. The sea front is lined with large resort hotels, condominiums and miles of sandy beach. We spent a few summers in a condo along this beach and we enjoyed our stay each and every time.
3. Padre Island National Seashore - This wonderful island will offer you 80 miles of natural seashores. If you are looking for a quite spot to enjoy a beach to yourself this is the place. It is great for those who are looking for a place to enjoy nature and be by yourself.
4. Corpus Christi - This has to be one of the most popular playgrounds along the Texas Gulf Coast. This wonderful city has a lot to offer its visitors. Corpus Christi not only offers you beaches and swimming, but it is also home to the Texas State Aquarium where you can enjoy over 250 species of sea life. You will be able to see the fish and other wildlife close up as you walk through this huge aquarium. My children really enjoy going to the aquarium and are never ready to leave. When you are ready to leave the aquarium be sure and stop by and visit the USS Lexington Museum. This aircraft carrier, which served during WWII, is permanently at port here and a floating naval museum for all to visit. We spent around 2 hours just on the aircraft carrier. My children had to see and do all it has to offer. You can tour the hangar deck, sickbay, admiral’s quarters, galley, flight deck and the bridge. You can get up close and personal with the huge antiaircraft guns on board. The USS Lexington Museum is open daily and there is a fee charged to visit, but it is worth the price. Corpus Christi offers you great restaurants and the liveliest nightlife along the coast of Texas. This was one of our favorite spots along the coast because of all the things there is to do.
As you can see the Texas Gulf Coast has something for everyone, from fishing and swimming to history and aircraft carriers. The gulf coast should be able to fulfill everyone in your family’s idea of a vacation. Plan your trip and I promise you a great time along the Texas Gulf Coast, you won’t be sorry you visited!
