A good deal on a great tire

by vitara12 , Dec 13 '04
Pros: Aggressive tread means sure traction in snow.
Cons: Noisy on pavement due to tread design.
Ok, so I borrowed an ad line from Kelly but I think that says it all. The size I am reviewing is 195/65r/15 which is the size for my Toyota Corolla 2005 LE. I purchased these tires new at my local Goodyear dealer for $53.00/tire plus mounting and ...

Pros: Snow-excellent,wet-very good,ice-good to every good,dry-good,handling-good,noise-very good,treadwear-about 30K
Cons: No driving negatives. Tread appearance is a little course.
Value priced extreme traction snow tire with decent superhighway manners at high speed on dry pavement. S-rated
Meets State of Oregon Mandatory Chain Law requirement: if you have these tires on your car, you do not have to have chains...that says a lot! Mountain and Snowflake rated just like Michelins costing easily twice as much. These tires are made by Kelly-Springfield, now owned by Goodyear and are somewhat hard to find but they are very good in winter and excellent for the money.Very deep tread and lots of siping for wet and ice grip.Got them at Sams Club. Put them on a Toyota Camry so I can ALWAYS get to and from the airport (50 miles away)for work-related travel.

Good Snow Tires That Need Studs
by merdique ,Nov 25 '06
Pros: excellent snow traction, cheap price, good tread life, studdable
Cons: need studs, newer studless tires available at about the same price
Note: These are a Kelly( a Goodyear owned company) tire and maybe sold under other brand labels such as Wintermark MagnaGrip.

I put a set of 185/70/14s on my Ford focus, a couple years back, and have been pleased with their performance. These tires do very, very well on fresh snow, slush and even packed snow. The difference between these tires and standard all-seasons, during winter driving is profound.

Their performance on ice is better than most all season tires, but nothing to write home about. If you're going to buy these tires, I'd really recommend you get them studded, if your local laws allow for it.

The price of these tires are excellent. I purchased a set of 4, mounted and balanced on steels rims, w/ shipping for under $400. However, studs can cost about $15 a tire, and will bring the total price in the range of newer, more advanced studless tires (ie. the excellent Dunlop Graspic)

Tread wear is excellent for a snow tire. I don't see why the average driver couldn't get a solid 4 + seasons out of them.

Pros: Traction in ice and snow, safety, and price.
Cons: A little noisy on dry pavement because of the tread design.
I live in Canada, north or Toronto. These tires gave excellent snow and ice traction, as well as excellent dry pavement handling. We drive on them every day, they also prevented two accidents. I would say these are better than Artic Alpin. They are also 2/3 of the price. You cannot go wrong with these tires. Make sure you put them on all four, and take them off in April.

Pacemark Snowtrakker ST/2

Pros: Excellent traction in snow, good traction on wet and dry roads.
Cons: None.
My car is a 1997 Ford Escort.

This tire is an excellent snow tire, regardless of it's cheap price. Much better snow traction than a normal all season tire. I drove through about 5 snow storms in 2004-2005 and never had a traction problem. They are good in deep snow, and good at high way speeds driving through slush. Dry pavement noise is slight at certain speeds, but is expected with any snow tire. Handling in the rain is fine, and the tires are pretty good on dry pavement too. I've got about 5000 miles on these tires so far. I only purchased two tires for the front, instead of four tires as recommended, and had no handling problems.
