Toyo Proxes FZ4 All-Season High Performance Radials - Sticking you to the road...

by jag2112 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Feb 04 '02
Pros: Superb grip. Aggressive Styling. Affordable Performance.
Cons: None so far...
After cruising around in my 1999 Alero GLS Coupe for the past 61,000 miles, it was time to retire my set of Goodyear Eagle LS tires (which originally came with the car).

I was generally happy with my Goodyear Eagles, especially since I've had...

Add a little excitement to your driving - dry or wet

by bbhacker , Jan 25 '03
Pros: great handling, very good in rain, good value for the price, quiet
Cons: balancing and alignment must be perfect, not for frequent or heavy winter driving
After about a thousand miles on my new Proxes FZ4's, I find it hard to find fault. I struggled over the decision for quite some time, but am quite pleased with the outcome.

I have a 2000 Honda Civic Si and recently had to change my stock...

Bargain High Performance

by jedison , Jul 08 '04
Pros: Excellent grip in dry and wet. Relatively inexpensive.
Cons: Tire wear, but it seems to be par for the course with high-performance tires.
These tires came with my 2000 BMW 528iT when I purchased it last year (235/45 R17s). So far I have been very impressed with them. Dry grip is excellent, and the tires work well with the sport suspension of the BMW. The car also feels quite confident in ...

A good compromise between high performance and touring

by sfoltz , Apr 08 '03
Pros: Quite agile and responsive for an all-season tire, great wet traction
Cons: Tires seemed "greasy" when new, traction in wet slowly declining with treadwear
These replaced the original Michelin MXV4 Energy Plus XSE tires on my 2003 Tiburon GT. I mounted these on 17" rims. When I first purchased these, I was basing my decision to buy on previous experience with Toyo tires. Initially, I was not happy with ...

Beware of the noise

by gatolukas , Mar 13 '02
Pros: Inexpensive High Performance tires
Cons: High noise, specially at low speed, wear out fast (15 k miles)
I decided to buy a new set of TOYO Proxes FZ4 for my recently acquired 1998 Mercedes SLK230 with 38,000 miles.

I went for this brand and model considering that they were a cheap alternative that could handle the 140 mph that I get on my car....

I'm Happy with Toyo

by tobbers , Jun 28 '03
Pros: Cool, "Toyo" name, smooth, quiet, good performance for an all-around tire.
Cons: Not a pure high performance tire.
It snows in Michigan. It rains too. I needed a tire that won't put me in the ditch. A young man at t ...

Concur with the noisy assessment
by lobo79 ,Nov 12 '05
Pros: They seem to balance well on my Enkei wheels.
Cons: Noise over bumps in the road and wet traction.
I have a set of these on a 05 WRX and I have to say they are the worst performance tire I've ever owned. They have poor traction even on dry surfaces. Rain slick roads are a serious problem for these tires. In my case I only have 6500 miles on them.

My biggest complaint is the extremely harsh noise I get whenever I run over even the smallest of potholes.

Worst tires for performance driving
by formentin ,Oct 16 '04
Pros: I haven't killed myself yet (but got close a few times)
Cons: NOISE - WET TRACTION - THE WORST
These tires are the WORST I've ever driven on.

Had them for 16,000 mi - the noise is unbearable and started around 12,000 mi. Never had a tire make so much noise. Apparently there is a known manufacturing defect, i.e. the walls ripple due to poor construction creating that mind numbing noise.

Wet traction is terrible, with my rear fishtailing when I apply moderate acceleration from a standing start. Dry traction is only moderately better.

My previous set were Avon - lightyears better than these (lasted me 50,000 mi)- and that's saying a lot since the Avon's were ok. The OE Dunlops were great but tread life was only 25,000 mi.

If you drive a performance vehicle RUN AS FAR AWAY FROM THESE TIRES AS YOU CAN. Don't let a salesman con you into buying them - they've been discontinued.

THESE TIRES SUCK!

Not a real M S tire
by wazzu70 ,Nov 28 '06
Pros: price is reasonable for areas that see moderate weather conditions.
Cons: Traction is worse than my BFG KDW-2 in the rain and has far less performance.
I had these tires in a 215/45/17 on my jetta TDI when I bought the car. Living in Seattle I was immediately disappointed in their wet performance as the car would hydroplane easily and get horrible traction in the wet. I was unfortunate enough to have to drive in the snow with these tires when I got caught in a snow storm. They were the hands down worst all season tire I have ever driven on.

If you are looking for an all season tire to drive in the rain and some slush or snow in these are not your best bet. Go with the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S or similar if you are driving in anything but moderate weather conditions. The tire has far too low of a profile to be of any use in rain or snow.

Good all-around performance tire
by outerlimit ,Jul 27 '06
Pros: Good performance and value
Cons: Toyo could stand behind their product better.
After learning the OEM tires on my Miata were $150/corner I gave these puppies a try. At half the price they seem to have 95% of the handling of the Michelin Pilots that came on my car plus they are longer wearing and have an all-season tread.

At 20K miles they have little tread left but with my driving style this really isn't that bad.

I liked this tire enough to buy a set for my Protege5. On this car the tread wore well but the carcass delaminated forcing an early replacement. Toyo said the problem was that I didn't keep the tire properly inflated so there was no adjustment. Truthfully I've been so busy that I haven't been checking them like I should so they could have a point.

I'm still running these tires but trying to monitor the pressure better.

Not bad overall
by redstangman ,May 18 '06
Pros: Great looks, awesome performance on dry pavement!
Cons: S**k on wet pavement, deadly on snow, noisy
I bought a Mustang GT convertible with these tires already on it four years ago. I only have the car out during the non-winter season but have had a couple instances where it snowed before I put it away. These tires are definitely not meant for snow! (White knuckle scary!) They also do poorly on wet roads. I can't even get away from a standing start without spinning them on wet pavement if I do anything other than baby the gas. They are also very noisy on the road. Now since they are the only tire I've ever experienced in a convertible, that might not mean much. Obviously convertibles are going to be noisier than hardtops. Other than that I've gotten 45,000 miles out of these things. I need to replace them now as I've worn the corner beads off them. But, in general, I've been pleased.

These tires are well worth the price!
by survey_gurl99 ,Sep 04 '06
Pros: Grips road, prevents wrecks in slippery weather!
Cons: High in price, around 120-130 a tire, money well spent.
I bought 4 of these tires from a local tire shop about 5 months ago. When I bought my car this type of tire was already on it and I decided to buy them again because of their superior quality. I live about 20 minuets away from town and I have to drive on a long winding road. The speed limit on the road is 50 mph and it feels like I can fly around the sharp corners. These tires literately grip the road and hug every turn. Also these tires have a built in water repellent system to prevent hydroplaning in slippery conditions.
