Throughout their career, the Everly Brothers presented an excellent balance of pop and country music. Their take on pop was fresh and unique, combining close vocal harmonies with early rock & roll. Phil and Don's approach to country was woven out of their small-town experiences, their Appalachian heritage as taught to them by their father, Ike, and the steady guidance of Chet Atkins, the legendary Nashville guitarist and producer. On 1972's PASS THE CHICKEN AND LISTEN, the Everly boys team up once again with Atkins, after straying from him in the 1960s. The result is a cohesive blend of pop hooks with a gritty Tennessee sensibility. The wholesome tenor voices of the brothers are backed by a great Nashville studio band, and Atkins is featured throughout, especially on the guitar interlude to "Woman Don't You Try to Tie Me Down." Other songs such as "Somebody Nobody Knows" by Kris Kristofferson and the well-known "Good Hearted Woman" by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings really emphasize the charming countr... |
